Milan, May 28, 2015 – The IEO holds today the "IEO for Women", the first and the only meeting in Italy organized by a hospital to dialogue with patients, after and beyond the hospitalization and treatment. Conceived and designed by Umberto Veronesi eight years ago for women affected by breast cancer, the event aims not only to welcome the patients, but also to give doctors and society a clear signal about what it means today getting breast cancer.
Breast cancer affects one in eight women in Italy and it is estimated that over 520,000 people have been diagnosed with this tumor. The cutting-edge medicine can and should take care of this population. "Optimal care is no longer the only one that guarantees the best oncologic results - declares Roberto Orecchia, IEO Scientific Director IEO - but also the one that provides the least damage over time, both physical and psychological.
"The attention to the integrity and the psychophysical identity of the woman is the belief that I sent to the European Institute of Oncology - comments Umberto Veronesi – and it gives me great satisfaction to see how IEO, twenty years after his birth, remains a pioneer in reducing the toxicity of the treatments. The treatments do not have to heal the disease forgetting the person. I repeat that we should abandon the term "patient". We cannot longer imagine treating someone without knowing who she is, what she thinks, what his life plan. This is the profound meaning of IEO for women. "
