European Institute of Oncology: the Stages of the Increase

This is the year the project to expand the Institute is approved. The project envisages the construction of new buildings next to the existing one: one for developing clinical activities and the other to house patients and their families. This project will implement Italy’s first model of a hospital that makes the quality of life of the patient and family members a central, fundamental aspect.

The development project of the Balanced Scorecard is implemented. This is a tool that makes it possible to measure and track company performance based on a multidimensional concept. It offers an organic and exhaustive view of the results that are actually achieved by the Institute in safeguarding the health of its patients and developing the scientific and professional know-how of its staff. To date, the IEO is the first Italian health organisation to implement the Balanced Scorecard.

The European Institute of Oncology is awarded the title of “Great Place to Work”, earning a place on the list of the best Italian companies in terms of organisational climate. The Institute is one of the few completely Italian companies in this special classification, and it is the only one in the health field.

The Institute is visited by the inspectors of the Joint Commission, the prestigious American agency that, since 1953, accredits North American hospitals based on the highest standards of quality existing in the field of health.

The Institute is accredited by the Joint Commission with an extremely high score: out of 994 requirements, it meets 986. The IEO is the first cancer centre outside the United States to receive this prestigious award.

This accreditation confirms solid facts. Today, the European Institute of Oncology is in a position to help many Italian cancer patients avoid undertaking “journeys of hope” far from home. It offers the expertise, methods and state-of-the-art technologies offered by the finest international centres. Examples include the linear accelerator for modular radiotherapy (IMR), the equipment for stereotactic radiosurgery and the Institute’s diagnostic imaging equipment, considered among the most accurate and advanced in the world.
