  • Research activities

    The overall focus of my research lab is to determine the mechanisms by which oncogenic viruses and other tumor microenvironmental stresses contribute to neoplasia by post-translational modification of proteins.
    In particular, we have been studying the virus-/stress-induced SUMOylation and phosphorylation of Histone Deacetylases (HDACs) to show how this changes the neoplastic program, primarily through altering the cancer epigenome.
    Thus, our research lab is currently pursuing two major projects:

    • The biology of HDAC1 (and HDAC2) and how its post-translational modifications cross-talk and control its activity, also in light of its potential significance as a target for cancer therapy.
    • The regulation and exploitation of the SUMO (Small Ubiquitin-like-Modifier) pathway by oncoviral proteins.
