19th-23rd September 2016: 4TH HEAD & NECK CANCER AWARENESS WEEK
Head and neck tumours may develop in some specific areas, namely the mouth, throat, nose, sinuses, larynx (vocal cords), pharynx, salivary glands and thyroid.
Head and neck cancer is the seventh most common type of cancer in Europe. It is about half as common as lung cancer, but twice as common as cervical cancer. There were more than 150,000 new patients diagnosed in Europe in 2012. As in other head and neck cancers, risk factors are related to lifestyle habits, especially the abuse of tobacco and alcohol; also a poor diet and poorly-conditioned teeth seem to act as co-factors.
The Make Sense campaign, run by the EHNS (the European Head and Neck Society), aims to raise awareness of head and neck cancer and ultimately improve outcomes for patients with the disease. The campaign has reached its forth edition and also this year IEO will take part in it with a dedicated day.
On the 23rd of September, during the Early Diagnosis Day for Head and Neck Tumor, the Institute will offer free screening consults to all the people that meet the established criteria.
