How to request the IEO Second Opinion

Requesting the IEO Second Opinion is very easy, just follow the next 3 steps.

Initial phase

Prepare all the patient's clinical documentation, officially translated into Italian or English, which describes the chronology of the treatments performed from the onset of the disease to the current state of health. The IEO Second Opinion is based on the information sent, so it is essential that the documents are as accurate and up to date as possible. We accept official translations only: if the original clinical reports are not in Italian or English, the translated documents must acknowledge the translation agency and/or must have a stamp and a signature of the translator.

Important: In case of complex medical history it is essential to receive a covering letter from your referring doctor. The letter must contain the following information:

  • diagnosis and stage of the disease,

  • non-oncological illnesses,
  • detailed oncological history,
  • chronology of the treatments performed,
  • therapies in progress,
  • medicines being taken,
  • ongoing problems
  • the clinical question for IEO Second Opinion.

You have to download and complete the following forms:

The attachments required to complete your request are:

  • An identity document (ID or Passport) of the patient

If the applicant is NOT the patient the further attachments required are:

An identity document (ID or Passport) of the person requesting the IEO Second Opinion on behalf of the patient

Proof of the authority of the authorised person to act on behalf of the patient as:

  • Holder of the documentation, adult or minor
  • Parent of child with parental authority (family)
  • Entity/individual acting as ward (providing proof)

Conclude your IEO Second Opinion request by sending the complete medical documentation

Send us the forms duly filled-in and signed and the attachments to our email address [email protected]

Important: If we receive additional medical records and/or questions after the physician has concluded the IEO second opinion, a new IEO second opinion must be required.

Payment

Once the clinical documentation has been viewed by our triagists, we will contact you within two working days to proceed with the payment of your IEO Second opinion by bank transfer.

After receiving the payment, the IEO request Second Opinion will be entrusted to the specialist who will issue the medical report within 5 working days.

The cost of the IEO Second Opinion is €500.

In the event that the doctor who is entrusted with your IEO Second Opinion deems it necessary, further in-depth consultations may be requested, the costs of which are indicated below.

In these cases, before proceeding, you will be contacted for your approval.

  • If a pathological consultation is required to complete your IEO Second Opinion, there will be an additional charge of €232.00. If an imaging consultation is required to complete your IEO Second Opinion there will be an additional charge of €189,00.
  • If an in-depth consultation with another physician will be required to complete your IEO Second Opinion there will be an additional charge of €200,00.
  • If a multidisciplinary consultation is required to complete your IEO Second Opinion there will be an additional charge of €350,00.
  • If, after a first review, the case will again be assigned to the same physician who dealt with the first IEO Second Opinion, within 12 months from the first consultation, then the amount to be paid will be 350 euro.
  • If the new clinical documentation implies a change of the referring physician the cost will be 500 euro

Important: further questions put forward following the sending of the report must come under an additional IEO Second Opinion.

1. When do I need to make the 500€ bank transfer?

Following the sending of the clinical and administrative documentation (via email or courier), the IEO Second Opinion service staff will contact you to provide the bank details for the payment of the service.

2. What kind of clinical documentation must be sent?

It is essential that the documentation is accurate and complete, accompanied by a report prepared by the patient's referring physician, which describes in detail the chronology of the treatments and the patient's medical history. If the patient has performed surgery, discharge letters with histological outcome are indispensable. Regarding radiological examinations (eg tac, pet, rmn) pre-surgical only paper reports are indispensable. If the patient has undergone chemotherapeutic and / or radiotherapeutic treatments, the reports of the treatments issued by the doctors are indispensable, specifying the type of cycle, dosage, duration.

3. What types of consultation are available?

It is possible to request a surgical, oncological or radiotherapy consult. In the IEO Second Opinion Request form (Service Request Form) you should  indicate which type of consultation you require

4. What is meant by "confirmation of the diagnosis"?

The confirmation of the diagnosis is a "histological assessment", that is the rereading of the slides of one or more histological samples at the Pathological Anatomy of our Institute. This is a paid service that is requested by the doctor who has been entrusted with the advice of IEO Second Opinion. The request for confirmation of the diagnosis is not to be confused with the request for confirmation of medical treatment, which provides for the evaluation of the clinical procedure based on the pathology and current clinical conditions of the patient.

5. Following the IEO Second Opinion, how can IEO care be accessed?

Following a IEO Second Opinion consultation with a treatment proposal, the patient can be included in the treatment path. The IEO Second Opinion staff will forward the patient's request to the IEO doctor who issued the consultation.

6. When is it possible to talk to IEO staff?

In case of need, IEO personnel will contact the patient by telephone at the number provided in the forms.
