After an experience of study at the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, in 1993 he obtained his PhD in Experimental Medicine at the University of Amsterdam.

From 1990 to 1995 he was Assistant at the Center for Blood Transfusion and Transplant Immunology - Department of Hematology, Ospedale Maggiore in Milan.

From 1995 to 1998 he was Deputy Director of the Division of Medical Oncology of the Maugeri Foundation in Pavia.

Currently Director of the Division of Laboratory of Hematoncology in IEO.

 His main research interests are the in vivo models of hematopoiesis, angiogenesis and anti-angiogenic therapies, and the transplantation of stem cells.
