Multiparametric MRI

In the last few years, remarkable progress has been made in prostate imaging thanks to the development of multiparametric MRI, that provides morphological images of high spatial resolution (<1mm) along with functional images that provide information on lesion cellularity and vascularization.
Multiparametric MRI of the prostate improves on the performance of conventional MRI and has become fundamental in planning the diagnostic and therapeutic pathway of patients.

In 2012 at IEO, we performed 505 multiparametric MRI of the prostate, and for 2013 we increased the time available for these exams in light of the growing requests from doctors and patients. We foresee our investment of time, resources and energy in the development of multiparametric MRI of the prostate yielding new and exciting opportunities to improve men’s health and wellness over the next 5-10 years.

  • Useful Information about Multiparametric MRI of the prostate

When is multiparametric MRI of the prostate useful?

    • When there is clinical suspicion of prostate cancer (for example with elevated PSA), but biopsy of the prostate was negative; in order to eliminate doubt about the presence or absence of a tumour. In effect, we are able to answer the question: “Is there a tumour?”.
    • When it is necessary to be sure about where a lesion is located in the prostate gland, in order to target of a biopsy on it, for example. In effect, we are able to answer the question: “Where is the tumour located?”.
    • When biopsy has yielded the diagnosis of a clinically significant tumour that is suitable for robotic surgery, in order to indicate to the surgeon which of the nerves in the prostatic plexus can be spared. In effect, we are able to answer the question: “Can the nerves be spared?”.
    • When prostatic biopsy has yielded the diagnosis of a low-risk tumour and the patient does not require any treatment, in order to monitor clinical parameters of the tumour and to intervene if they become unfavourable. In effect, we are able to answer the question: “Has the tumour become aggressive?”.

Is multiparametric MRI of the prostate safe?

    • Yes, the examination does not expose the patient to ionizing radiation.

Is multiparametric MRI of the prostate an invasive exam?

    • Absolutely not. At IEO, the exam is performed without the use of an endorectal coil and currently has a duration of less than 30 minutes.
