Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation

Oncology rehabilitation aims to prevent and treat those complications that may affect the cardiorespiratory, nervous, musculoskeletal or lymphatic systems. Such side effects may arise because of surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or the disease itself.

Our team of physiotherapists carries out both motor and respiratory rehabilitation in every ward.

These are our main activities

  • Motor rehabilitation for patients who have undergone axillary surgery (lymph node biopsy and dissection);
  • Respiratory rehabilitation for patients who have undergone thoracic surgery or abdominal surgery requiring a subcostal incision;
  • Physical exercises for patients affected by oncological fatigue;
  • Motor rehabilitation for patients with peripheral nerve paralysis due to head and neck surgery;
  • Respiratory, motor and postural rehabilitations for patients who undergo breast reconstruction with an abdominal or dorsal flap;
  • Motor and respiratory rehabilitation for intensive care inpatients;
  • Prevention and treatment of lymphoedema.

We also provide a fee-based outpatient service* for the following treatments

  • Treatment of fibrosis/axillary web syndrome after axillary lymph node biopsy/dissection;
  • Treatment of capsular contracture after breast reconstruction with prosthesis/tissue expander;
  • Treatment of tissue stiffness caused by radiotherapy;
  • Treatment of breast/pectoralis/dorsal oedema after breast reconstruction;
  • Motor rehabilitation for patients with peripheral nerve paralysis due to head and neck surgery;
  • Urological rehabilitation for patients who have undergone radical prostatectomy or cystectomy;
  • Respiratory rehabilitation for obstructive lung issues following thoracic surgery.

Lymphoedema treatment will soon become available in our outpatient service, including manual lymphatic drainage and compressive bandaging.

*The service is only available for those who have already been admitted to the hospital once.
