The European Institute of Oncology has become in five years the first centre in the world for Breast Care in Day Surgery
Milan, July 13 - The IEO Day Surgery celebrates the first 5 years of its performance with record figures: from May 2010 to May 2015 there were carried out 22,450 surgeries in day surgery, and with a constant growing that has allowed us to achieve an annual average of almost 5,000 interventions.
The largest number of cases belong to both Plastic and Reconstructive and Breast Surgery divisions, which together account over the 50% of activity, placing the IEO at the first place in the world for the number of breast cancer interventions in Day Surgery. The IEO also carries out interventions of Preventive Gynecology, Diagnostic Thoracic Surgery and other specialties (Endoscopy, Melanoma Surgery, Urology, Interventional Radiology, General Surgery, Cervicofacial surgery).
"Our experience on surgical oncology in day hospital is very important and 100% positive - comments Giovanni Francesco Manfredi, Head of IEO Day Surgery Division - with just 3.5% of all patients unfit to return home within the evening and with a very low incidence of complications. The goal is to reduce discomfort for the patients, by offering them a chance to undergo a complete surgical treatment in a single day. We guarantee a safely discharge, instructions and medications for the pain treatment at home and a telephone support from the moment of the discharge. The Day Surgery is increasingly appreciated because it helps enormously to overcome the psychological impact of a cancer diagnosis by reducing the "weight" of the surgery ".
"When in 2010 we opened the IEO 2 Day Center - explains Roberto Orecchia, Scientific Director - our aim was to create a modern idea of the hospital that grouped the same place all the diagnostic and therapeutic activities that could be done in one day. The new facility, thanks to an ad hoc technology and equipment, has allowed us to start a surgery without hospitalization, which represents a new frontier for the Europe. In just 12 hours a woman can undergo the same surgical and radiation therapies that normally are performed in one or two days of hospitalization".
